Driver stopped while going 110km/h… in a school zone!
At lunchtime on Wednesday, May 24, police were conducting a speed control operation on Wilfred Lavigne within a school zone where the speed limit is 30km/h. With the help of a speed camera, police recorded a vehicle doing 110km/h. The driver, an 18-year-old male resident of Aylmer with a learner’s permit, was fined $1,521 and given 14 demerit points. His licence was suspended for 7 days and his vehicle impounded for 30 days.
A World Health Organization study on road speed says, “Most unprotected road users are killed if hit by a car traveling 50km/h”. This incident comes at a time when surrounding communities such as Champlain Park and La Croisée are holding events to promote traffic calming measures and awareness around the dangers of speeding in residential communities.
