Don’t forget the Wet’suwet’en  

I sincerely hope Canadians will not just rush from one cliff edge to the newest, COVID-19.  Those older cliffs are still there, facing us, and we ignore them at our future peril. I refer to the attempt to put a fracked-gas pipeline through Wet’suwet’en territory. Not to mention all the other Indigenous unceded sites where railroad blockades were forcibly removed.

I am still shocked and angry that the RCMP can deploy enormous resources to enforce an injunction against Indigenous people defending their territory – but not have the resources to investigate the murder of Indigenous women or locate missing women (or their remains). Please explain that to Canadians!

I saw the news photographs of the line of red dresses across the bridge – a very powerful statement. Believe me, we will still call the RCMP and their political leaders to task for failing to pursue justice for these missing women and for failing to protect their community’s safety. Thus the RCMP is complicit in this epidemic of racism that our communities are facing. That epidemic is more dangerous and persistent than COVID, by a long shot.
