Project Destination Vanier: 

Developers invite the public to consult the plans February 20

Residents are invited to an information session on the Destination Vanier mixed-use development project on Thursday, February 20, from 6 pm to 8 pm, at 118 Boulevard du Plateau. 

Destination Vanier is located at the intersection of du Plateau Boulevard and Vanier Road. This session is organized by the real estate developer (Québec Inc. 2869 4289) and BBL Construction. The project, which has been underway since 2014, has changed direction several times to comply with the City’s expectations over the years, particularly with regard to street junctions, traffic lights, bicycle paths and the rapid transit link with Western Gatineau. What was originally intended to be a commercial project has now become a mixed-use project (commercial and residential). 

Officials expressed surprise at the bad press they have received so far. Contrary to what has been reported in some media, there is no question of building a mega-mall with a huge parking lot. “Rather, we are talking about small businesses, including a gym and a daycare centre, restaurants, as well as apartment buildings,” explained Sylvain Bertrand, President of BBL Construction. “There will also be several underground parking lots and electric charging stations will be installed. With regard to pedestrian traffic, the promoters have not skimped on pedestrian safety. Walkways and sidewalks lined with shrubs, pedestrian crossings and public squares with benches are part of the plans. The human dimension is at the heart of the project. Everything has been thought of to facilitate people’s movements in a safe manner. By-pass roads and access roads have been provided for this purpose. 

In addition, the promoters insist that the ecological study did not find any vulnerable or threatened tree species. The trees already on the site were in any case not viable within the framework of the project. A series of landscaping projects are part of the plan and new trees will be planted. It is important to mention that the developer says twice the number of trees required by the City will be planted. The developer added that “this influencial project is being developed by a local company that has proven its focus on social well-being and has been active in the community for over 30 years.”
