LETTER
Crosswalks need lights!
There are many older people and others of all ages who cross the street between the Monastery and Square Wilfrid Lavigne to visit the Galeries Aylmer. The pedestrian cross-walks are not being respected by drivers. Many step on the gas; sometimes one driver stops, but the one in the next lane doesn’t. It is a constant risk. A pedestrian was hit two years ago and hurt badly. The city has not done anything to protect the pedestrians, such as putting up lights. Some of us walk with canes, elderly, and we feel threatened by cars who just speed by, even when I put out my hand to indicate I wish to cross.
I fear for myself and others who are frail. I would appreciate that the city pay attention. Even the police have asked for support on this and yet nothing is being done.
These are high-use crosswalks. There should be a crossing light. My vote went to those sitting in office now. And I hope in return they will address this problem before there’s a death.
