COVID-19 update: first death for Outaouais
The Centre integré de santé et des services sociaux de l’Outaouais (CISSSO), confirmed the first coronavirus-related death in the region. According to a press release issued by CISSSO on April 17, the patient was admitted at the Hull Hospital. On April 20, the number of COVID-19 cases in the Outaouais stood at 214, with 170 confirmed cases in the Gatineau urban area. For rural parts of the region, CISSSO’s respective service centres reported 25 cases in Papineau, 12 in des Collines de l’Outaouais and five or fewer for both the Pontiac and the Vallée-de-la-Gatineau. 88 people in the region have recovered from the virus.
CISSSO also confirmed nine hospitalizations, with four patients requiring intensive care. It added that 20 health care employees have been infected and that the virus has broken out in two of its long-term care facilities (CHSLD). Seven cases were reported at the CHSLD de-la-Petite-Nation and nine at the CHSLD Lionel-Émond in Gatineau. In an effort to bolster its resources to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, CISSSO has hired 409 new employees, since the start of the outbreak, including nurses, auxiliary nurses and service aids.
