Completely closed at night:
Road work on Lucerne Boulevard until the end of October
Road work on Lucerne Boulevard, between Vanier Road and the Champlain Bridge, will run until October 24. The work will include asphalt resurfacing and rebuilding the shoulders.
“Yes, bike paths should be built when the pavement is being done on the boulevard. Bike paths on both sides of the boulevard are planned. Actually, that portion of the road will be widened so that cyclists can use it,” reported Richard Bégin, Deschênes District Councillor.
Instead of having to use the path along the Ottawa River, once built, this new lane will give cyclists direct access to the interprovincial bridge all year long.
“I had suggested that iron posts be installed to protect cyclists but the administration told me that at this point it was not possible. One reason is that if a driver had car trouble on Lucerne, he/she wouldn’t be able to pull over -- which makes sense -- but I believe we could have found a compromise,” added Mr. Bégin.
Announced many months ago, the work was delayed because of the nesting period – April 6 to August 31 – in the forest environments, and because of negotiations with the NCC, which owns a lot of land south of Boulevard Lucerne on this stretch. The work will be done between 7 pm and 5 am and will require complete closing of all lanes between 9 pm and 5 am. One lane will be open, in alternation, between 7 pm and 9 pm. Vanier, Aylmer and Rivermead Roads will serve as detour routes as well as Place Samuel-De-Champlain. The dates when the work starts and finishes may vary according to work progress and weather conditions. No doubt, the city will notify the public as this information is known.
