The Club de Voile Grande-Rivière (CVGR) recorded a good season for sailing and remained open during the summer, despite closures of many other camps in the region.
“It was a really good year,” said Hugo Morin, the sailing director of CVGR. “We’re proud to be one of the camps that were open this summer.”
Their summer camp program abided by guidelines provided by the government and the Association des Camps de Québec. Morin says they assigned just five students to every instructor. “We had to cancel some days when it rained,” he said. “But we have a really big space at the marina and we were able to space out everywhere.”
The camp saw participation drop by 20 kids compared to last summer, according to Morin. Morin says he encountered a lot of grateful parents, who were glad their kids would have somewhere to go during the summer months. “We definitely had a lot of new people this summer which was great,” he said. The number of sail boat dockers at the marina also set records this summer. Morin says the waiting list doubled, with 48 people wanting a spot.
Morin hopes the club will be able to resume a program next year, that gives secondary students in the area a chance to come down to the marina and sail. “My vision for the sailing school is that we’re [a place] where everyone, adults and kids, can come and learn how to sail,” he said.
