City waste, rural disposal?

 

In my letter published in the Bulletin last week I was agreeing with Councillor Mike Duggan about the inevitable increase in dumping on rural roads that will be caused by the new limits on the amount of garbage Gatineau residents can dispose of through the municipality's waste management system. Mr Duggan replied to the letter expressing issues he has with my suggestion that rural municipalities be able to bill Gatineau for the dumping.  In an email he states:  “As for a mechanism to bill Gatineau, I certainly am not the one to talk to, unless Gatineau in turn can bill the surrounding communities for using our roads, buses, and other services.”

Mr Duggan may be unaware that roads and transportation services in Gatineau receive financial support from the province and, in some cases, the federal government. Those of us who reside outside the city pay taxes from which this financial support is drawn. If the councillor is that concerned about country people using city roads maybe he should suggest building a wall.
