From table to garden … and back again!
City offers free compost for residents
Eager Aylmer gardeners were out early on May 9 and 10 to pick up their freshly-made compost at the facility on Cook Road. Keeping his carbon footprint low, Councillor Mike Duggan drove his electric car out to pick up compost for his garden. At four locations over the weekend, the city distributed 500,000 tons of the nutrient-rich compost, made from residents’ own table scraps collected in the brown bins every week. Many commented that the compost was so perfect, it looked like rich topsoil—and yet, just a year ago, it was a pile of banana peels and apple cores. This is the fifth year the city has distributed the free material, which enriches the local gardens that will produce nutritious homegrown fruit and vegetables.
