City elections:
Signs, advertising and reimbursement for candidates
With the official election period underway as of September 22, Aylmer has been decorated with election signs. Action Gatineau, the city’s sole political party, put up its signs a week or so prior to the official campaign period. Elections Quebec, explained that election advertising and campaign signs are permitted in most cases, but are not reimbursable expenses until after the opening of the campaign.
“The reimbursement of signage is pro-rated to the campaign period,” Stéphanie Isabelle of Elections Quebec told the Bulletin. “So only the costs for the 45 days of signage are eligible election expenses.”
Ms Isabelle added that signs erected before the official opening of the campaign period are not considered election signs. “They are subject to the municipality’s bylaws on public signage,” said Isabelle.
