Canada Food Guide opens to veganism
The Society for the Protection of Animals congratulates the government for relying on scientific evidence rather than listening to meat and dairy producers who have a financial interest in how the guide steers consumers.
Since 1942, the Canada Food Guide has been influenced by dairy, meat and egg producers. Today, despite pressure from these industries, the Guide has turned to nutrition and health experts for advice. Meat and alternatives, as well as dairy products, are no longer included.
Fewer people are consuming animal products and by-products. Studies into healthy eating show that meat, eggs and dairy products should be consumed in moderation, or not at all. (We maintain that) most people are now aware that millions of vegans enjoy far better health than omnivores.
The new Canada Food Guide is a step in the right direction, but it still isn’t perfect. Now we have enough experience to know that the consumption of animals or by-products of animals is more to do with taste and far less with any health reason, which is why we advocate vegan food. Industries that use animals for clothing, entertainment and food still exist not because we need them for our survival, but for pure pleasure, which results in the abuse and death of millions of animals daily.
SPA Canada is asking the government to provide resources to all who wish to become vegans, such as informative websites with vegan recipes. This also means better access to vegan food in public places, schools and government buildings.
