Aylmer once again mourns the passing of one its eldest veterans

A mere two weeks after burying Korean War Veteran and well know public figure Bernard Brennan, the Aylmer community and Legion mourns the loss of 96-year-old veteran Leo Fournier.

The two men were close friends, having worked together on many of the legion’s Poppy campaigns. They passed away within 24 hours of each other on September 28 and 29, respectively.

A World War II veteran, Mr Fournier served in the United Kingdom as well as in continental Europe, and earned the France and Germany Star and Service Medal, among other merits for his work with the Canadian infantry during the conflict.

After his discharge in 1946, at the age of 22, Mr Fournier settled back into civilian life with his much-loved wife Sylvia Goeres. They celebrated over 70 years of marriage before Sylvia passed away just a few months ago.

Mr Fournier had worked for many years at Canada Post and he was very devoted to his family. He is survived by six of his seven children, as well his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His funeral service was held at St. Mark’s Catholic Church on October 18 and he was buried at the Beechwood Cemetery.
