An 84-room expansion coming for the British Hotel

The City of Gatineau has approved the expansion project for 71 and 79 Main Street, which will add 84 units to the lot which houses both the British Hotel and Café.

Although the project as such has not been fully disclosed to the public as of writing, it has received the green light from the Aylmer Heritage Association which has been consulted more than once during the approval process of both the urbanism committee and the municipality.

The president of the association, Micheline Lemieux, stated that “the project is interesting and will be carried out responsibly. By the choice of materials, entrances, and how different sections are connected, we believe the expansion will complement current buildings.”

According to Ms Lemieux, business at the British should not be affected too much by the construction and should remain operational for the duration of the project. The rear parking area and a portion of the terrace are slated to be filled to connect the Hôtel and Café.

The Heritage Association hopes plans will be in line with what the public wants for the site. “Private and public consultations are hopefully planned,” noted Lemieux. 

The city’s consultation on the project is advertised in this edition of the Bulletin. A public notice will also be posted on the building. The public will have the opportunity to study the plan and be heard during a public consultation that will take place in the coming weeks.

Mike Clemann, the British Hotel and Café owner told the Bulletin that a press conference showcasing the expansion should be announced in the beginning of September.
