LETTER
Algonquin nation, Canada reach agreement
The Algonquin Nation and the Government of Canada reached an agreement, July 4, regarding the Indigenous Peoples Space, following a 13 day demonstration and a hunger strike by Grand Chief Verna Polson.
The two parties agreed that 100 Wellington would not open without a resolution that successfully addresses the interests of the Algonquin People. Furthermore the “”infill” section within the Indigenous Peoples Space will be a dedicated space for the Algonquin. The Algonquin Nation and the Government of Canada will begin to develop this space, and the Government is prepared to have a building constructed should this be part of the Algonquin request.
Grand Chief Polson is doing well and is home recovering with her family. The Algonquin Nation thanks everyone who supported us during this challenging demonstration. We appreciate everyone who stopped by in support of the Algonquin people and to learn more about the demonstration, the authorities who were accommodating throughout our negotiations and kept us safe, those who generously donated food, water, ice, money, and traditional medicines, to those who performed traditional ceremonies with singing and drumming, and for those who had the courage to speak out in support of us. Kichi migwech.
