Algonquin Moose Committee begins work

 

    To arrive at a solution for the preservation and development of moose in the La Vérendrye wildlife reserve, representatives of the Algonquin Nation and the Government of Quebec initiated work leading to an agreement on the management of this part of the Algonquin territory.
    The Algonquin Negotiation Committee of representatives of directly affected communities is composed of Lucien Wabanonik (Lac Simon), Jean-Guy Whiteduck (Kitigan Zibi), Jimmy Papatie (Kitcisakik), Brian Dumont (Lac Simon) Savanna McGregor, Grand Chief of the Algonquin Anishinabeg Nation Tribal Council (AANTC), and Norm Odjick (AANTC). The Lac Barrière Algonquins have chosen to negotiate an independent agreement with Quebec but will also have an observer with the committee. Studies will be conducted on moose habitat and the effects of human activity (forestry, tourism) on its survival.
    Algonquin elders with knowledge of the territory, moose and traditional practices will support the work of the technical committee and add practical and traditional knowledge to the data analysis. Daniel Smith (Kitigan Zibi), Hector Penosway (Kitcisakik) and Pierre Papatie (Lac Simon) form the group of elders.

    The committee will undertake an information campaign with the communities in order to inform them of the results and to collect the comments of the members of the nation.
