A mature response
The Bulletin’s “We are all human” front page illustration is a mature response to the tragic shootings in France and the subsequent debate regarding freedom of expression. The choice between “I am Charlie” and “I am not Charlie” is a false one.
I am sure that a vast majority of my fellow citizens condemn the violence of January 7. I am also very confident that, although supportive of the freedom of expression, Canadians make an effort to be considerate with regard to their neighbour’s religious (or non-religious) beliefs.
What the Bulletin’s front page illustration brought home to me was the essential truth that when we look at others, we should see ourselves. And with that realization, we are obliged to follow the Golden Rule: do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
Bravo to the Bulletin for taking its readers to the next level of public debate!
