LETTER
A federal leaders’ climate debate?
The headlines about climate may seem like satire, but they’re real – and they show how distorted and confusing the public conversation around the climate emergency is.
In a high-stakes election year, this makes it hard for voters to understand the issues and weigh the options, let alone know which politicians actually have a plan to address the biggest issue of our time.
A federal leaders’ climate debate could help change this. Millions of viewers. Political leaders and their platforms under the public spotlight. It would give voters all the information they need to see clearly which party has the best strategy to tackle the climate crisis head on.
As our public broadcaster, the CBC is an obvious choice for hosting a climate debate. They also have a responsibility to inform viewers on important issues of national interest – and to listen to the public. But if we’re going to get the CBC to host a federal debate, they need to know there’s widespread public support – and with CBC finalizing their elections coverage right now, we have to act fast.

Canada’s never had a federal climate debate.
