A Canada Day Parade in Old Aylmer?
There are currently no major projects in Aylmer to commemorate Canada’s 150th anniversary -- but not for long, hopes city councillor Mike Duggan.
“I’m looking at organizing a parade in Old Aylmer on July 1,” said the Lucerne ward councillor. “I’m in discussion with groups like the Aylmer Legion to plan it. We’ve heard grumblings about the lack of activities in Aylmer and so some of us are trying to put this event together.”
Fergus to support Canada Day Parade endeavour
Hull-Aylmer MP Greg Fergus will throw his weight behind the Old Aylmer Canada Day initiative spearheaded by Mr Duggan.
“It’s a great idea, I will look into this. I’ve been thinking about organizing a parade myself. It will not be possible to receive funds for 2017, but we need to start somewhere,” said Fergus.
Last summer, Gatineau released a list of 11 projects that will be hosted in the city to celebrate Canada’s 150th. There are events in Masson-Angers, Gatineau, and Hull sectors, but nothing major is scheduled for Aylmer as yet.
“No Aylmer organizations responded to the call for projects,” said Nathalie Brunette, project manager for Gatineau’s Comité du 150e - Gatineau 2017. “We are open to including events in our program, but we will not be able to help financially. I’ve heard of some initiatives in Aylmer, but they are being organized by groups or businesses. Anyone is able to organize events for Canada’s 150th, and we can help.”
Generally, Old Aylmer is quiet on Canada Day as many residents head to Ottawa for the fireworks or to the cottage to celebrate. Mr Duggan added that it will be interesting to see which groups embark on this new event, adding to the annual parade in Aylmer on rue Principale on June 24, Quebec’s Fête nationale.
