2.1% property tax hike for Gatineau in 2020

For the second time in two years, property taxes should be going up by 2.1%.

According to the Gatineau City budget proposal tabled on Wednesday, November 13, this increase is due to tax indexation being set at 1.6%, with an addition of 0.5%  on infrastructure catch-up, which adds up to the suggested average increase of 2.1%.

Overall, the 2020 budget set at $651.8M, a 4.65 % increase over last year, will once again be largely dependent on property taxes, which is 87.8% or $565.3M of the total budget.

Several rates, such as building permits, arena rental fees and parking permits will be increased. Parking fees on city property, such as at city hall, will increase from $2/h to $3/h. The window of time when clients will be charged for parking, presently from 8 am to 7 pm, will also increase by one hour, from 7 am to 7 pm.

Gatineau city councillors will vote on this recommendation and the overall budget on December 10.
