Plateau’s library ready in 2020

After years of discussion, the official announcement has been made: contruction of a city library for Le Plateau neighbourhood will begin this fall, with the opening set for the spring of 2020.

The city has earmarked a contractual sum of $8,627,147 to Construction J. Raymond inc. for the work, although the total project will cost $13,133,000.   Surface area is 1650 m2, and it will be set in the Cœur du village, not far from the large AGORA “mixed development project”. The dramatic structure will feature huge windows, providing natural lighting inside.

Councillor for the ward, Maude Marquis-Bissonnette, is praising the project for this relatively new and growing area, straddling the old Aylmer-Hull boundary, and now with a population of 17,500. She says the library will be a “signal edifice”, attracting attention and traffic to the sector’s heart.

In 2015, city council had set aside $21.9 million for library development across the city; the Aylmer library is to follow Le Plateau’s project. Mayor Pedneaud-Jobin noted that the residents here have been waiting without this service for a long time, and he praised council for creating a clear plan of development for the city’s library network.  Presently, the city has 10 municipal branches.
